(Re)Searching Europe:

Narrating the Past, Making the Present and Imagining

The Future

In the face of new economic and political developments in Europe and theEuropean Union, we hope that the 10th International "Border Crossings" Student Conference will shed light on some of the most "hot" political agendas of our era and will contribute to the ongoing discussions of the "crisis" on a local, national, supra-national, and global levels.

Reflecting on Giddens''s notion of "loss of ontological security "''a characteristic of post modernity *the conference will explore the multiple cultural strategies by which people cope with this modern predicament. In this general situation of crisis there seem to be two Europes: the one developed with a few leading states and the other with many undeveloped countries who face the fear of economic, political and social disintegration. So, the title is quite indicative since we are situated at a point where Europe and European boundaries are to be questioned and thus in a way "searched". The current situation seems like "Europe and the people without
Europe", who struggle to find their own paths, employ their pasts in the present, sustain images of cultural distinctiveness and struggle for a better future.

Conference subtopics:
* Local, regional, national and European identities
